Encounters : the politics and poetics of migration
Speaker: Diana Yeh (University of East London)
Date: Tuesday 29th May, 5.15 – 7pm
Location: Lecture Theatre, Chelsea College of Art & Design
Diana Yeh’s current research, Beyond (British)-Chineseness: Politics and Poetics of Art and Migration, focuses on four artists of Chinese descent – Shih-I and Dymia Hsiung, Li Yuan Chia and Anthony Key. Based in Britain at different periods from the 1930s to the present day, these artists’ migration histories also encompass locales in South Africa, Italy, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, while their works circulate internationally. Focusing in on key points in time/place, her research brings to light how, within specific contexts of power, these individuals experience – and through their artworks and everyday practices affect – the social and cultural dynamics of several multi-ethnic localities across the globe.
